Most of our favorite vegetables are old time varieties that people currently call "Heirloom". It is with great pleasure that we offer up our favorites for you.

IMPORTANT!
You will receive 5 seed nuts in your package. If purchasing other items, please note that they will be shipped separately from these to prevent mailing damage.

Purchasing Chestnut seeds now (Harvested October 5th, and immediately refrigerated) requires you to continue stratifying them. You can do this by directly planting outdoors now, or continuing to refrigerate them until 80 days have passed before planting indoors or in a greenhouse. Chestnut seeds must be kept in an environment at near Winter temperatures in order to stratify them. This primes them for germination.

Description:

These chestnuts are grown by our friends at Coppertop Chestnut Grove in Northeast Pennsylvania.

This chestnut variety has an incredible story. After the blight decimated almost all American chestnut trees in the country in the early 1900's, a small grove of resistant trees were discovered by James Carpentar. Carpentar sent budwood of these trees to Dr. Robert Dunstan who then cross-pollinated these with a mixture of three USDA Chinese chestnut selections, The Kuling, Meiling and Nanking chestnuts.

The offspring of these trees have grown healthy for 50 years since with excellent resistant to the blight. The nuts have all of the best characteristics of the American chestnut flavor in a larger nut size. The trees are beautiful but are closer in size to their Chinese parentage. (see images)

Unlike others, we do not buy seeds from outside sources, but this is our rare exception where we are providing a neat seed crop from a farmer friend. Our plants are hand grown with tender loving care. Your purchase helps us to continue our quest to organically produce premium seeds here on our farm. We are passionate about gardening and strive to present nothing but the best for our fellow gardeners.

We guarantee germination for this current year or your money back. Seeds must be stored in a cool dry area.

Photos are expressed property of Sherwoods Seeds.
